<\/a><\/a><\/a>Male athletes from around the world have posed nude for a calendar to promote \u2018healthier masculinity\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a decade the Warwick Rowers calendar spread the name of the English university rowing team around the LGBT+ world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a collaboration between a gay photographer and \u2013 mostly \u2013 straight rowers. The idea was to show solidarity with gay, bi, and trans men who often feel excluded from sport.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it\u2019s rebranded as Worldwide Roar and is open to any athlete from any sport around the world who identifies as male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, it has a new theme too \u2013 to offer a fresh look at men\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while on face value, it still celebrates one type of male body, those behind it say it has a deeper purpose too. Indeed, the Worldwide Roar (WR) project is now the subject of an international academic study by universities in the UK and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embracing male vulnerability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Project founder and creative director, Angus Malcolm, explains how the project developed over time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I was gay, the Warwick Rowers were straight \u2013 and keen on sport, something from which I knew gay men felt excluded.I saw how together we could challenge homophobia through a naked calendar, and we did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018But Sport Allies, the registered charity we fund, showed us there was a wider problem \u2013 what the academics call \u201chegemonic masculinity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Misogyny, structural racism, male mental health problems \u2013 these all come from that common cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It means that everyone \u2013 men, women, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ populations \u2013 we all get defined by the rules and repercussions of male privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It\u2019s a pandemic that\u2019s been destroying lives for centuries, and I know many people have been working on effective antidotes for a long time. Ours is based on changing how we look at men.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-time contributor, Lucas Etienne, added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Quite rightly, the wider focus for some time has been on how we look at women, and how that promotes abusive thinking and behavior.\u00a0 But how we look at men \u2013 and how men look at each other \u2013 also needs to change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We\u2019ve seen how men can grow by embracing vulnerability and opening up to being looked at by people of all genders and sexualities.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now academics are studying these issues in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A research team, consisting of Professor Brendan Gough and Dr. Adam Lowe of Leeds Beckett University, UK, and Dr. Michael Kehler of University of Calgary, Canada, hope to gain an insight into the participants\u2019 motivations for contributing to the Worldwide Roar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will also look at their experiences of taking part, their perspectives on the issues, and how taking part affected them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
