If passed the bill&nbsp;would repeal the 1996 \u2018Defense of Marriage Act\u2019 which defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some Republican critics dismissed the bill as a gimmick and more than three-quarters of House Republicans opposed the bill, some arguing the vote was a Democratic trap ahead of the November midterms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis bill makes crystal clear that every couple and their children have the fundamental freedom to take pride in their marriage and have their marriage respected under the law,\u201d Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in floor remarks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/07\/19\/house-republicans-same-sex-marriage-law-00046682\">Politico<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the likes of Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise voted against the bill, number three House Republican Elise Stefanik and Liz Cheney were among those who voted in favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf gay couples want to be as happily or miserably married as straight couples, more power to them. Trust me, I&#8217;ve tried it more than once,\u201d Republican politician Nancy Mace tweeted after the vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/RepNancyMace\/status\/1549513956494118912\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s face it: This is a [Make America Great Again] Supreme Court. A MAGA, right-wing extremist Supreme Court,\u201d said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-62232518\">BBC<\/a>&nbsp;reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Mr. Schumer did not commit to bringing the bill to a vote in the upper chamber of Congress but said \u201cwe\u2019re going to look at everything we can do,\u201d further making it unclear if the Senate will take up the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same-sex marriage became recognized across America in 2015 after a Supreme Court decision but Democrats are urging for a codification after recent policy overturns.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a concurring decision in June,\u00a0Justice Clarence Thomas voiced support for reconsidering\u00a0the court\u2019s earlier same-sex marriage ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though many were frightened by Justice Thomas&#8217; opinion,&nbsp;Justice Samuel Alito, another conservative, specified that the Roe vs Wade decision &#8220;concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A record 71 percent of people in the U.S. support gay marriage,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/393197\/same-sex-marriage-support-inches-new-high.aspx\">according to a Gallup poll from June<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>47 Republicans have voted to write same-sex marriage into law.
