Speedo is the brand of a manufacturer of clothing and accessories for bathing and swimming sports. It originated in Sydney (Australia) and is now based in Nottingham (England). They designed a swimsuit in the form of briefs which became very successful and Speedo is now a common name for this shape of swimsuit.

It seems that for most Americans wearing a speedo for a man can appear provocative and it has become taboo. This is not the case in Europe including Russia and in Asia. In Australia there is no prejudice to wearing a speedo, moreover, it is the country of origin of this type of swimwear created by the brand Speedo International Ltd. in 1914.
In addition, some European countries such as France and Germany made speedos mandatory because boxers and swim shorts are prohibited for hygiene reasons. Check the prohibition sign that you can find in any public pool in France.
